The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is an indie roguelike video game designed by Edmund McMillen and developed and published by Nicalis. Rebirth was released for Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita in November 2014, and for Xbox One, New Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U in July 2015. Rebirth is a remake of The Binding of Isaac, which was developed by McMillen and Florian Himsl and released in 2011 as an Adobe Flash application. This platform had limitations and led McMillen to work with Nicalis to produce Rebirth with a more-advanced game engine, which in turn enabled the substantial addition of new content and gameplay features. Two expansions have been released, Afterbirth and Afterbirth+, in October 2015 and January 2017, respectively, with more game content and gameplay modes; Afterbirth+ also added support for user-created content. A third expansion, Repentance, was announced in September 2018.

Similar to the original Binding of Isaac, the plot is based on the biblical story of the same name and was inspired by McMillen's religious upbringing. The player controls the eponymous Isaac, a young boy whose mother, convinced that she is doing God's work, strips him of everything and locks him in his room. When Isaac's mother is about to sacrifice him, he escapes to the basement and fights through random, roguelike dungeons. The player defeats monsters, using Isaac's tears as projectiles, and collects items which modify his attributes and abilities, potentially creating powerful combinations. Unlike the game's predecessor, Rebirth has a multiplayer mode, allowing an additional player to join.

Rebirth had a positive reception. Reviewers praised its gameplay and improvements on the original Binding of Isaac, but criticized its story and graphic imagery. Afterbirth and Afterbirth+ also had a generally-favorable reception, with reviewers criticizing their difficulty but praising their DLC. Tools for modifying Afterbirth+ were criticized. By July 2015, Rebirth and The Binding of Isaac had sold over five million copies combined.

Doa dhuha rumaysho. Since I got the expansion, I have played quite a lot of it. At first, I was very excited about all the new stuff. New items, new floors, new enemies. I was excited to start downloading mods and even doing my own.

Now, when I’ve spend a lot more time on the expansion, my view on Afterbirth+ has changed.

When it comes to challenges, five new ones have been added. Backasswards is clever, Aprils Fool is funny, Ultra Hard is difficult, Pokey Mans and PONG are both fun. To me, these challenges are better than any Rebirth or Afterbirth challenges.

Many people complain about lack of content. I don’t know what people expect, but Afterbirth+ was never meant to be fileld to the brim(stone) with content. The DLC is a community DLC. It was always Edmund’s intention that the largest portion of the DLC would come from the community. With the expansion, we are able to create almost anything we want. Even I, who have no idea how to program can easily start up the ‘RoomEditor’ and start designing rooms. Much more content will be released from the community through Edmund himself. I’m excited for this.

Overall, I believe people are being way too critical towards the expansion. Sure, Greedier will be a pain in the ass to beat with The Lost. But hey, as Northernlion keeps saying, “We don’t do this because it’s easy, we do it because it’s hard”!
